Under the united AP state, Telangana region was subjected to a lot of injustice in the field of Irrigation sector. Since Telangana region is between two rivers Godavari and Krishna, CM KCR realised that there was an opportunity to create water facility in abundance. By making plans with a comprehensive awareness and implementing them, the Telangana State within six years of its founding, had registered many
remarkable victories in the irrigation sector. The State government had embarked on constructing major irrigation projects. Tanks are revived.
The problem of water for irrigation had been solved. Due to increase in the availability of irrigation water, there is large out put in the agriculture yields. Ayucut is increasing. Agriculture has expanded. 2019-2020, during Rabi season, FCI had announced that among the Paddy that they have procured all over the country, Telangana accounted for 55 per cent. This alone is a proof about the rapid strides that Telangana State made in agriculture sector. Telangana State is becoming as Agriculture based State. For agriculture the lifeline is water for irrigation. Hence there is prominence given to the Irrigation sector. Since CM KCR understood the importance of Irrigation, he decided to revamp the department and strengthen it. As on date, the Irrigation department is scattered in different wings. It is divided as Major, Medium, Small, IDC, Project-wise and Packages wise. The CM felt that all these scattered wings should come under one Umbrella for the effective monitoring.
Hence, it was decided that the Irrigation department would be recast into 15-20 regional departments and each one will have one Chief Engineer as its Incharge. Under the CE’s jurisdiction, Projects, Reservoirs, Tanks, Check dams and others would be there. The CM had asked the officials to prepare a draft proposal in this regard in the last week review meeting. Principal Secretary (Irrigation) Ranjit Kumar and CM Secretary Ms Smitha Sabharwal have conducted a workshop on revamping of the Irrigation Department. They have prepared a draft proposal. The Proposal will be submitted to the CM on Monday. A detailed discussion will be held on the proposal at the review meeting on Monday and final decision would be taken. In the review meeting, Principal Secretary, CM Secretary, E-in-C’s and CEs will participate.
