The Supreme Court approved a rape victim’s request to end her 27-week pregnancy. Justices B.V. Nagaratna and Ujjal Bhuyan criticized the Gujarat High Court’s approach to the woman’s case.
They noted the cultural importance of marriage and emphasized that unwanted pregnancy, especially due to rape, can severely harm a woman’s physical and mental well-being.
After reviewing a medical report, the Court decided in favor of the abortion. The woman has been instructed to visit the hospital on Tuesday. If the fetus is viable during the procedure, there’s a recommendation to place it in incubation.
