Hyderabad: The Southwest monsoon, which arrived in the State on June 5, a week ahead of the scheduled arrival, has resulted in the State receiving excess rainfall so far than the normal rains. Much is in store with officials expecting the monsoon to peak during this month and in August.

The cumulative rainfall recorded from June 1 to July 5 in the State is 233.1mm against the normal rainfall of 159.7 mm with a deviation of 46 per cent. Save for Vikarabad district, which recorded deficient rainfall with a negative deviation of 21 per cent, majority of the districts have recorded largely excess and excess rainfall so far.

Compared to last year’s rainfall of 225.7 mm during June 1 to July 5, the State received a notch higher rainfall (233.1 mm) this year during the corresponding period. Similarly, in GHMC limits, the cumulative rainfall from June 1 to July 5 is 143.6 mm against normal rainfall of 123.1mm with a deviation of 17 per cent. On Monday, the highest rainfall of 39.9 mm was recorded at Veldanda in Nagarkurnool district.

According to Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), the period from June to September is referred as Southwest Monsoon. The Normal annual rainfall of the State is about 905.3 mm and about 80 per cent i.e, 720.5 mm of annual rainfall is received from Southwest monsoon.

This year, the Southwest monsoon arrived in Telangana on June 5, nearly a week ahead of the schedule. Generally, the normal onset of monsoon in the State is on June 12. By June 10, the entire Telangana was covered by Southwest Monsoon and since then most parts of the State have been receiving steady rains.

More rains are in store with IMD officials expecting the monsoon to peak this month and in August and as per their estimates, this year, rainfall for the State is pegged at 751.9 mm. Southwest monsoon seasonal (June to September) rainfall is most likely to be normal in northern parts of the State, while it could be excess in Central and Southern parts of the State.
