Delhi/Hyderabad, Dec 28 (Hydnow): Relief for 8 Indian Navy Veterans in Qatar, the Navy officers who were sentenced to death in the espionage case got a major relief today.  Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said a Qatar Court has given a key ruling, staying the Indian government’s appeal against their death sentence.  it said that their death sentence was reduced to imprisonment. 

The MEA said that they are waiting for the detailed verdict.  It said in a statement that ambassadors and other officials attended the court during the hearing.  It is a good result to reduce the death sentence of those 8 Indians to imprisonment.  The Ministry of External Affairs of India said that the full details regarding this judgment are not known yet and they are discussing this issue with the Qatar authorities. 

Officials said that they have been supporting the 8-member family since the beginning, but it is a sensitive matter and it is not appropriate to talk too much about it.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it has been raising this issue continuously with the Qatar government and will continue to do so.   Meanwhile, the family members heaved a sigh of relief as the punishment of those 8 Indians was reduced. The 8 ex-naval officers were working in an organization called Al Dahra. This organization provides training and other services to the armed forces of Qatar. It is run by an ex-air force officer from Oman. those 8 Indians were detained in August 2022 on charges of espionage in submarine activities. The court that investigated this case gave a verdict in October this year, sentencing them to death. India’s Ministry of External Affairs filed an appeal in Doha against this verdict. Considering this, their death sentence was reduced to imprisonment. (Hydnow)
