The ‘No New Clothes for Eid’ campaign launched by several individuals and organisations in view of the financial problems faced due to lockdown seems to be showing its impact.

Despite Eid-ul-Fitr just days ahead the shop keepers in the old city are idling at their establishments and literally killing time. “We opened our shop in the morning and only a few persons came and enquired about the price of the accessories. There is no business in the market and all traders are in the wait for customers,” said Ruknuddin, a footwear trader at Pathergatti road.

Another trader Yahiya Khan, who is into apparel’s business, said since morning only a handful of customers turned up at the shop. “Business is quite low people are buying only one dress as against multiple dresses for the Eid-ul-Fitr. We don’t see good business in coming days as people are facing financial crisis,” he said.

A few traders attributed the drop in customers to the ‘No New Clothes for Eid’ campaign launched by few individuals and organisations in the city. “The campaign started by the individuals could be one of the factors for the drop in sales,” admitted a shop keeper at the Patel market in the old city.

Abid Mohiuddin, general secretary old city traders association said every year business worth crores of rupees is reported at the markets during Ramzan. “Nevertheless, after lockdown the shops were closed for over 50 days. When we opened we have to do business alternate days and now we do not see any hope of business picking up as Ramzan is just few days away,” he said.
