The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 will be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 19. The matches will be played in Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi subject to approval from the Indian government.
The decision was finalised after the IPL governing council’s meeting, which was held via a video-conference to discuss the issues concerning the 2020 edition.
The cricketing board has decided that the first match will be played on September 19, followed by the final on November 10, 2020. The 53-day tournament will witness 10-afternoon matches starting at 15:30 IST while the evening matches will start at 19:30 IST.
A detailed schedule of the matches is expected to be announced very soon.
The governing council also discussed the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which will be finalised in due course, including the agencies to execute and deliver a bio-secure environment for the safe and successful conduct of IPL 2020 season.
Women’s T20 Challenge will also take place in the UAE and will comprise three teams with four matches to be played during the IPL Playoff week.
IPL 2020 has been made possible by the ICC’s decision to postpone the October-November Twenty20 World Cup in Australia owing to the COVID-19 pandemic due to which the host country expressed its inability to conduct the event.
