Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has received relief in the Toshakhana corruption case. The Islamabad High Court has paused the three-year jail term that was given to him by a lower court regarding the Toshakhana issue.
The case revolves around allegations that during Imran Khan’s time as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022, his family members unlawfully sold gifts received from foreign countries. These gifts were meant to be surrendered to the Cabinet Division, as per Toshakhana regulations.
Imran Khan faced complaints from rival political parties, leading the Election Commission of Pakistan to bar him from participating in elections for five years. This later escalated into a criminal case. On August 5, the Islamabad court, investigating the matter, sentenced Imran Khan to three years in prison. Following the court’s decision, he was swiftly apprehended by the police and placed in Attock Jail, located in the Punjab state.
However, the Islamabad High Court’s intervention has led to a suspension of this verdict, granting Imran Khan temporary relief from the sentence.
