Hyderabad: The areas under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) are literally driving the third Covid wave in Telangana.
In the last week, the areas under GHMC have been consistently reporting anywhere between 60 per cent and 65 per cent of the entire daily Covid-19 infections during the third wave in Telangana.
On Saturday, out of the 2,606 positive Covid infections in Telangana, 1,583 cases were from GHMC while on Friday, out of 2,295 infections in the State, the health authorities reported 1,452 positive cases from the city and immediate suburbs.
The surge of Covid-19 infections in GHMC also reflects the trend that is being witnessed across other Indian States where the respective capital cities like Bengaluru in Karnataka and Mumbai in Maharashtra have been reporting maximum Covid infections on a daily basis and are being viewed as the prime drivers of the third wave.
Due to the surge in Covid infections, the daily active case in Telangana has increased from 3,779 positive infections on January 2 to 12,180 positive infections on January 8. Of the 12,180 positive infections close to 10,000 active cases are from areas under GHMC.
Apart from areas under GHMC, the Omicron-driven Covid-19 has been also active in urban centres of Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy districts. On a daily basis, both the districts have been reporting below 300 Covid-19 infections during the ongoing third wave.
