Coronavirus: Maharashtra cops battle odds to maintain order amid lockdown

HIGHLIGHTS

Cops in Maharashtra are battling against all odds and working round the clock to ensure people follow lockdown rules.

From March 22 to April 19, cops in Maharashtra have collected fines from people found violating lockdown orders.

They have arrested 11,645 people for not following lockdown rules, while 301 people were arrested for not following lockdown norms.

A total of 55,393 cases have been registered against people in the state for violating lockdown rules. The state police also seized nearly 37,000 vehicles in the last 28 days.

Police in the state, which has been worst-affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, is trying their best to get people to follow lockdown orders in order to curb the spread. However, they now face a bigger challenge as several policemen have also been infected by the deadly virus while on duty.

There are 40 policemen in the state who have been tested positive for Covid-19. It may be noted that the tally of positive cases among Maharashtra police was 23 on April 16. Eight officers have and 32 lower-ranked personnel have tested positive for the virus as of April 20.

In Mumbai, one of the worst-affected cities in India, police are working long hours to ensure no one breaks Covid-19 lockdown norms. The summer heat has made their job even more difficult, especially as they are working longer hours than their usual shifts.

They also have to be extra vigilant on the streets as many people still continue to flout lockdown norms despite the situation in the state.

India’s health ministry said yesterday that some containment zones may see tighter norms from today and police in Maharashtra may need to further step up efforts to ensure implementation of stricter rules.

Cases continue to soar in Maharashtra, which has registered 3,651 confirmed Covid-19 cases with over 210 deaths. As the situation stands, India has registered over 17,000 Covid-19 positive cases and the death toll is now over 500.
