Morocco: A massive earthquake occurred in Morocco on Friday. Around 632 people lost their lives and at least 329 were injured. People in major cities from Rabat to Marrakesh ran out of their homes and offices in panic. Buildings were severely damaged.
The epicenter was about 70 kilometers south of Marrakesh. The core is near Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. Moroccan Media revealed these details citing government sources.
European Commission President Ursula Con Der Leyen expressed her solidarity with the people of Morocco in this difficult time in a tweet. Condolences to the families of the deceased. According to the Moroccan Interior Ministry, hospitals in Marrakesh are receiving large numbers of earthquake victims. Arrangements have been made to treat all of them. Government sources say that the damage due to this earthquake is likely to be severe.
Earthquakes are rare in North Africa. The Earthquake Monitoring and Warning Department said that such a massive earthquake in mountainous areas is unusual.
