Borewell Tragedy in Medak: Long Wait EndsBorewell Tragedy in Medak: Long Wait Ends

Medak: For Mangali Naveen and Goverdhan, the 12-hour-long wait to see their three-year-old son, who had slipped into a borewell at Podechenpally village of Papannapet Mandal in Medak district, alive again, turned into a tragedy when the boy was found dead at 17 feet depth in the borewell.

Though the district administration, which plunged into action immediately after coming to know about the incident, and brought in the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) following the advice of Finance Minister T Harish Rao, their efforts could not save him. The officials observed that lack of sufficient oxygen supply could be the cause of death. The officials started supplying oxygen within an hour after he fell into the borewell, but the effort could not save him.

The victim, Sanjay Saivardhan, third son of Naveena and Goverdhan, natives of Patancheru, who came to spend the summer at Naveena’s parent’s home, slipped into the borewell at 5.30 pm on Wednesday at his maternal grandfather’s field while the latter was busy filling another unsuccessful borewell he got drilled hours before.

As the NDRF team brought the body out at 4.32 am on Thursday, Naveena, Goverdhan, his grandparents and other relatives were seen crying inconsolably while his two innocent elder brothers, aged below 6 years, could not even understand what exactly happened to their younger brother.

District Collector K Dharma Reddy, Superintendent of Police Chandana Deepthi, MLA Padma Devendar Reddy and other officials spent the night at Podchenpally to oversee the rescue operation. The local administration under the guidance of the NDRF team dug a 25 feet deep parallel well as they came to the conclusion that the boy was stuck above 25-feet.

The officials and public representatives turned a bit emotional as they could not save the boy even after putting in all the possible efforts. The Papannapet Police have filed a case against the owner of the borewell rig for drilling a borewell without obtaining permission. Meanwhile, Balala Hakkula Sangham has held the revenue department responsible for the incident and approached State Human Rights Commission seeking action against them.

The Sangham has said that the revenue department, which needs to grant permission for drilling borewells, had no proper mechanism in place to monitor the illegal borewells.
