Bhagat Singh, one of India’s greatest freedom fighters, died at the ripe age of 23 in the year 1931, country is paying tribute to the revolutionary freedom fighter on his 114th birth anniversary.
If you ask any random Indian about Bhagat Singh, they will tell you they grew up reading or listing to stories about him from their parents or grandparents.
That’s the cause Singh’s stories of bravery and courage have inspired millions of people in every generation.
Bhagat Singh was born on 28 September 1907 and went on to become one of the most influential figures in India’s freedom movement.
He gave new shape and ideas to the movement with his revolutionary acts and supreme sacrifice.
But before he became such a revered name, Singh had very humble beginnings in Banga Village of Faisalabad district, which now falls in Pakistan’s Punjab Province.
Singh came to be known as a socialist revolutionary. His two acts of violence against the British and execution eventually made him a folk hero during the freedom movement.
The biggest act was done by him and his friend Batukeshwar Dutt in April 1929. The pair exploded two improvised but low-intensity bombs inside the Legislative Assembly in Delhi and showered leaflets from the gallery for the legislators.
After that, they shouted slogans and didn’t resist when authorities came to arrest them.
A few months before that, Singh and his companion Shivram Rajhuru fatally shot British police officer John Saunders in Lahore. They had mistaken Saunders for British police superintendent, James Scott, whom they had intended to assassinate to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai.
